DJI announces a partnership with Axon to sell drones directly to police and law enforcement agencies

Chinese drone maker, DJI is making a big push into the commercial drone market this year. Yesterday afternoon the company announced a partnership with Axon to sell drones directly to police officers through Axon’s Air program. Axon is the company that was formerly known as Taser. The partnership with Axon will allow police forces around the country to easily order DJI drones such as the Phantom of Matrice through Axon’s connected data network and Evidence.com services.

The partnership was announced at the third annual Axon Accelerate conference for more than 1,500 police, security, legal and technology professionals from around the world. DJI and Axon (Nasdaq: AAXN) will start with offering the Phantom 4 Pro and the more professional Matrice 210 drones through Axon’s connected data network and Evidence.com services to law enforcement agencies throughout the country.

“DJI’s partnership with Axon allows law enforcement agencies to add drone capabilities and data services through the same trusted provider they rely on for the tools, data and support they need to do their jobs safely and effectively,” said Michael Perry, Managing Director of North America at DJI. “Law enforcement agencies are rapidly adopting drones for their work, and often need guidance on how to establish a drone program and integrate it into their departments. DJI’s Axon Air partnership will strengthen and enhance law enforcement’s ability to protect public safety, respond to emergencies and save lives.”

The partnership seems to make a lot of sense. DJI announced earlier this year to put more emphasis on the commercial drone market, which they are clearly doing with this new partnership. The Chinese drone maker will benefit from Axon’s existing ties with police forces. For Axon, the drones will form a valuable addition to the hardware, they are already providing to police officers such as tasers and body cameras as drones are being used more frequently in search and rescue operations.

We have no information on the pricing that DJI and Axon will be using or whether the police drones will be outfitted with special instruments such as thermal cameras.
