This drone helps workers carry power lines between high towers [Demonstration video]

A company out of North Dakota, SkySkopes, is a professional drone flight operator that specializes in delivering data to companies in the energy industry. Their new idea is helping companies string power lines between tall towers.

How does it work?

With power cables being too heavy to move with drones, they instead carry lightweight wires that hook to the power lines. These strong, lightweight cables then pull the heavier lines from tower to tower. The aircraft used are much larger than a consumer grade drone from a company like DJI. Instead, SkySkopes uses an octocopter, which features 8 motors to help pull heavier weight.

These towers stand high above the ground and current methods in place require helicopters to carry the power lines. SkySkopes claims that their method with unmanned drones will be a safer alternative by keep operators on the ground. They also estimate drone use will be cheaper by 25% opposed to using manned aircraft.

A video uploaded 11 months ago to SkySkopes YouTube channel shows their drones stringing lines between towers. Check it out to get a better understanding of how it works!
