Thermal camera – DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise third party accessories

To make the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise the perfect search-and-rescue drone, you need to be able to outfit it with a thermal camera. In many cases where drones have helped locate missing people, the thermal camera made the difference. Now, in DJI’s press release it said nothing about any thermal camera form DJI, so the question is, will DJI allow the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise to accept third party accessories? We asked them to find out.

A thermal camera as a third-party accessory

We asked DJI if third parties (think FLIR Systems) would be allowed to developed other accessories, such as a thermal camera, for the Mavic 2 Enterprise. Here is what the company said:

“For now, the accessory port isn’t open to third-party developers using our Payload SDK. As you can imagine, there are flight dynamics issues when we attach accessories to an airframe this small so we need to be able to ensure they don’t affect flight performance. But in the future, perhaps!”

“Perhaps” with an exclamation mark sounds to me like, “for sure, but I cannot share anything about this right now.” We will be sure to ask FLIR Systems when they will have a thermal camera available for the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise.

I am curious to see how they would design a thermal camera for the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise, as the placement of a camera on top of the drone seems less than ideal and would probably not allow for a gimbal system.
