Propeller Drones lands $7M IEC contract for BVLOS inspection flights

Propeller Drones, an Israel-based drone service provider, has secured a $7 million contract with the Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) to inspect electrical infrastructure using drones equipped with beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) capabilities. This collaboration, supported by cutting-edge Uncrewed Traffic Management (UTM) technology from Airwayz, marks the first government approval for pre-approved BVLOS operations in Israel.

Airwayz, known for its innovative low-altitude UTM solutions, provides the backbone of this project. Its AI-powered system dynamically integrates real-time weather and location data, enabling seamless management of large drone fleets. This system not only enhances airspace optimization but also reroutes drones during unexpected incidents, ensuring safe and efficient operations.

Eyal Zor, CEO and cofounder of Airwayz, calls this milestone “a landmark for the entire industry.” He emphasizes the importance of studying each flight to refine the vision of autonomous drone operations. “As the system accumulates flight hours, we witness significant enhancements in airspace optimization, opening up business opportunities that industries have anticipated,” Zor says.

The project addresses a long-standing regulatory challenge, as uncrewed flights traditionally faced stringent safety requirements. Propeller Drones, alongside technology partner FlightOps, has developed advanced AI flight capabilities tailored to meet these demands. According to Propeller Drones CEO Itamar Kohali, this collaboration exemplifies how bringing together proven teams can expand commercial opportunities while paving the way for broader regulatory approvals.

By reducing risks in hazardous inspection areas, such as electrical grids, this innovative approach sets a precedent for industries worldwide. The three organizations — Propeller Drones, Airwayz, and FlightOps — plan to apply for additional tenders and approvals globally, furthering the adoption of autonomous drone operations across various sectors.
