Dolly Zoom arrives on DJI Flip drone in latest update

DJI has released a new firmware update for the compact and creator-friendly Flip drone, bringing major improvements to photo and video performance. The update — aircraft Firmware v01.00.13.00 — adds the dramatic Dolly Zoom feature to Smart Snaps and fine-tunes skin tone accuracy for better-looking shots right out of the camera.

Users running the latest DJI Fly app (v1.17.1 on both iOS and Android) will be able to take advantage of the new features immediately.

The Dolly Zoom effect, once reserved for professional-level gear, lets users create a cinematic warping background effect while keeping the subject centered — perfect for storytelling or content creation on the go.

Also included in the update are skin tone enhancements in Photo mode (12MP) and Video mode (≤30fps), giving a more lifelike and flattering result in real-world lighting. DJI notes that camera settings will be reset after the firmware is installed, so users should double-check their preferences before taking off.

The $439 DJI Flip stands out for its user-friendly features, including palm takeoff and landing, eliminating the need for a traditional remote controller. Users can launch the drone directly from their hand and control it via the DJI Fly app or voice commands, making it accessible for beginners and convenient for on-the-go shooting. Its AI-powered subject tracking ensures the camera remains focused on the user, facilitating dynamic shots without manual adjustments.

Weighing under 249 grams, the Flip is designed for portability and ease of use, exempting it from certain regulatory requirements in various regions. Its foldable design and integrated propeller guards enhance safety and make it suitable for indoor and outdoor use. The drone’s 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor captures 48MP stills and 4K video at 60fps, supported by a three-axis gimbal for stable footage.

With the latest firmware enhancing its capabilities and potential supply constraints on the horizon, now may be an opportune time for enthusiasts and creators to consider adding the Flip to their toolkit.
