DJI made pocket gimbals popular. HoverAir wants to make them fly. With the official debut of HoverAir Versa, the company has combined a professional handheld camera with the autonomous flying technology behind its popular X1 series, creating a hybrid device that can capture everything from stabilized walking shots to AI-powered aerial videos.
The all-new camera system that starts life as a handheld 3-axis gimbal camera but can transform into an autonomous flying camera by snapping on an optional Flight Kit. Instead of carrying separate devices for stabilized handheld footage and aerial shots, HoverAir says Versa is designed to handle both.
The announcement marks a notable expansion for the company. Previous products like the HoverAir X1 introduced the idea of a palm-sized flying camera that could automatically follow users without a controller, while the newer HoverAir X1 Pro and X1 Pro Max pushed that concept further with improved image quality, obstacle sensing, and more advanced tracking. HoverAir Versa takes a different approach by putting handheld shooting first, then adding flight capabilities when users want an aerial perspective.
The idea is simple: one camera, every angle. With a single click, users can attach lightweight flight wings to the camera. Once connected, Versa can launch directly from your palm, follow subjects automatically, perform intelligent tracking, and capture signature autonomous flight shots like Orbit, Bird’s Eye, and Zoom Out. Remove the wings, and it returns to being a compact stabilized camera suitable for everyday filming.
That flexibility could appeal to travelers, families, vloggers, and solo creators who don’t want to pack multiple devices. Rather than switching between a smartphone, handheld gimbal, and flying camera, HoverAir is pitching Versa as an all-in-one solution.
“We believe technology should remove barriers, not create them,” says MQ Wang, founder and CEO of HoverAir. “We created Versa to give everyone the freedom to capture life’s moments from every perspective without switching devices or compromising on creativity.”
Beyond the hardware transformation, HoverAir is leaning heavily on AI to simplify shooting. Versa includes AI subject tracking and Auto Framing to keep people centered in the frame. It also introduces AI Composition, which automatically adjusts framing for more polished-looking videos, while a feature called 3D Worlds captures scenes that can later be explored as immersive three-dimensional environments.
On the imaging side, HoverAir isn’t cutting corners despite Versa’s compact size. The camera features a relatively large 1/1.3-inch image sensor capable of delivering up to 17.5 stops of dynamic range, allowing it to preserve more detail in both bright highlights and dark shadows. It also supports 4K video at up to 60fps, 10-bit HDR recording, H-Log color, and improved low-light performance for creators shooting everything from sunny vacations to nighttime city streets.
That emphasis on image quality is a noticeable step beyond what many people associate with compact flying cameras. While HoverAir’s X1 series focused on making aerial filming effortless, Versa appears aimed at creators who also care about professional-looking handheld footage.
Is HoverAir Versa coming to the US?
HoverAir says Versa will be available worldwide through an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign, with early-bird pricing starting at $449.
For US buyers, however, availability is worth watching closely. In late 2025, the FCC stopped granting new equipment authorizations for many newly introduced foreign-made drones, making it difficult for companies like HoverAir to launch new products in the US.
The company’s waterproof HoverAir Aqua faced exactly that problem: despite a successful Indiegogo campaign, it has yet to reach US customers because it never secured FCC approval before the rules changed. Versa appears to be in a much stronger position, though. HoverAir says the new camera has already received the required FCC certification, meaning it should be eligible for sale in the US despite the tougher regulatory landscape.
After the crowdfunding campaign concludes, HoverAir says Versa is expected to reach select retail stores and online channels during fall 2026. The company will also showcase the new camera at IFA Berlin 2026, where media will get their first hands-on look ahead of the show’s official opening.
