Want a DJI drone? This $139 Neo deal is tempting

There’s a point where a drone deal stops feeling like a serious electronics purchase and starts feeling like something you could accidentally add to your cart. The DJI Neo has reached that point.

For Amazon Prime Big Deal Days, DJI’s tiny palm-sized drone is down to just $139, a $60 cut from its $199 list price. The deal is for the controller-free version, and with Amazon’s two-day October sale underway, this is exactly the kind of price that could disappear before shoppers have time to think about it.

And that’s what makes this particular DJI deal so tempting.

The Neo was already designed around the idea of making drone flying ridiculously easy. At 135 grams, it is small enough to throw into a backpack, and it can literally take off from the palm of your hand. There’s no need to unfold a complicated aircraft, find a runway-sized patch of ground or learn a controller before getting your first aerial shot.

Press a button, choose a shooting mode, and let the Neo do its thing. That simplicity is a huge part of the appeal at $139.

The Neo comes with a 1/2-inch sensor capable of shooting 4K video at 30fps, along with DJI’s RockSteady and HorizonBalancing stabilization. It also offers AI-powered subject tracking and QuickShots, letting the drone automatically perform cinematic moves while keeping you in frame.

For travelers, hikers, cyclists, and casual creators, that makes the Neo feel less like a traditional drone and more like a flying camera you happen to carry around.

And you don’t necessarily need a controller. The base $139 package is deliberately controller-free. The Neo can operate through its onboard controls, connect to a smartphone through the DJI Fly app, and even respond to voice commands. Its full-coverage propeller guards also make the little drone considerably less intimidating for newcomers.

Of course, $139 comes with compromises. The Neo has a single-axis mechanical gimbal rather than the three-axis system found on DJI’s more expensive camera drones. Battery life is rated at up to 18 minutes, and the drone relies on 22GB of internal storage rather than a microSD card. But those limitations are much easier to swallow when the aircraft itself costs less than many premium smartphone accessories.

And Amazon isn’t stopping at the base model. The Neo three-battery combo is down to $201, while the version with the RC-N3 controller is $242. There’s also the more immersive Motion Fly More Combo at $369, which adds DJI’s RC Motion 3 controller, Goggles N3, and three batteries.

At $500, a drone purchase takes planning. At $300, you probably compare models. At $139, the Neo starts looking dangerously easy to justify. And with Prime Big Deal Days running only through October 7, anyone tempted by the little 4K flying camera probably shouldn’t assume this price will hang around.
