DJI Flip: Leak reveals foldable drone tailored for beginners

Recent FCC filings and leaked videos on social media suggest that tech giant DJI is gearing up to launch a new beginner-friendly drone, DJI Flip. With a sleek foldable design, safety-focused features, and advanced technology, the Flip could hit the market as early as January 2025.

First things first, DJI seems to be catering increasingly to novice drone enthusiasts. Models like the $199 DJI Neo and the anticipated Flip indicate a clear strategy: make drones more accessible and fun for newcomers. Add to that the looming threat of a US ban on Chinese drones, and now might be the perfect time to snag a DJI drone.

A closer Look at the DJI Flip drone

The DJI Flip features a folding design that incorporates propeller guards into its structure, something like the HoverAir X1 Pro. Unlike traditional folding drones like the Mini 4 Pro, the Flip’s propellers fold downward, stacking neatly for a compact, pocket-friendly form. This makes it perfect for on-the-go drone pilots, offering portability without compromising safety.

Safety is a standout feature of the Flip. The integrated propeller guards make it ideal for indoor flights and hovering close to people. This emphasis on safety echoes the approach DJI took with the Neo, a highly-affordable FPV (first-person view) drone designed with beginners in mind.

Leaked images and animations reveal additional features, including:

  • Three-axis gimbal camera: Ensures stable, high-quality shots.
  • Landing supports: Located under the front propellers for smoother landings.
  • LiDAR-powered obstacle avoidance: Appears to match a few advanced capabilities like those featured by the new DJI Air 3S.
  • OcuSync 4 (O4) transmission: Offers reliable connectivity and compatibility with DJI’s RC 2 and RC-N2 controllers.

The Flip will also pack a powerful 3,110mAh battery (see FCC label below), larger than those of the Mini 4 Pro and Mini 3. This upgrade could translate into longer flight times, potentially exceeding 38 minutes.

Who is DJI Flip meant for?

The DJI Flip seems poised to fill a gap between DJI’s Mini series and the entry-level Neo. Its compact, safer design suggests DJI is targeting social content creators and hobbyists who prioritize ease of use over pro-level features.

This strategic move aligns with DJI’s recent efforts to attract first-time drone users. The DJI Neo, launched earlier this year, has been praised for its affordability and user-friendly features. By introducing the Flip, DJI may be reshaping its lineup, potentially phasing out older Mini models like the $299 Mini 4K to streamline its offerings.

DJI dominates the drone market, but the company’s future in the US faces uncertainty due to potential restrictions on Chinese-manufactured drones. If enacted, these bans could limit DJI’s availability, making now an opportune moment to invest in one of their cutting-edge flying cameras.

With drones like the Flip and Neo, DJI is doubling down on innovation, offering affordable, beginner-friendly models that don’t skimp on technology. For buyers, this translates to exceptional value. The DJI Flip, with its unique folding design and robust feature set, promises to be a worthy addition to the lineup.
