Need to register your drone? The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warns you to watch out for drone registration scams, where people are offering help to register your unmanned aerial vehicle. Drone registration only costs $5 and can be completed on the FAA’s Drone Zone website.
The FAA Drone Zone
Apparently, there are a number of websites out there that offer to help you with your drone registration. Some of them even try to mimic the FAA’s website or use the agency’s logo and suggest that somehow they are approved by the FAA. Don’t fall for any of these scams. If you need to register your drone, you simply go to the FAA’s Drone Zone website, fill in your information and pay the $5.00 and you are good to go.
In a statement, the FAA says that the agency:
“neither regulates these entities nor will [it] speculate on their legitimacy. However, we have recently received reports of vendors charging exorbitant fees up to $150.00 for this service. The actual FAA registration fee is $5.00. For that charge, hobbyists receive one identification number for all the drones they own. All others pay the registration fee for each drone they intend to operate.”
The FAA strongly advises all drone pilots to register their unmanned aircraft at the FAA Drone Zone as it is:
“the only way to make sure your drone is legally registered and that you’ve gotten your money’s worth.”
