Just after Billy had posted this article on the teardown of a Mavic 2 Pro, we now get to see how you can quite easily swap the camera and gimbal on your new DJI drone. In this video, TronicsFix shows us how to remove a cover, some screws and a ribbon wire to quite easily remove the entire camera/gimbal setup. I’m not sure this is something you would do on the fly, but it probably beats having to send your drone to DJI and have them do it for you.

DIY camera swap on the Mavic 2

This video shows how you have to remove six screws in total, remove a cover and as the last step you then pop the ribbon cable. Now you can carefully lift the camera and gimbal setup from the drone.

The video does not address, however, if any software changes are needed to make sure the drone knows, it is now equipped with a different camera. For instance, if you were to swap from the Hasselblad camera to the DJI Zoom camera, will the zoom functionality and Dolly Zoom feature automatically appear in your DJI 4 Go app? I would think so, but I’m not sure.

Of course, the next question would be, where do I get a new gimbal and camera assembly? Well, we do not know if DJI will start selling these online. I doubt it. But we have found one for sale on eBay. Check out this listing here for a Hasselblad gimbal and camera setup.

Proceed at your own risk though as we do not vouch for the eBay seller DroneBits, the quality of their product, even though it looks like the real thing. And keep in mind that, you may void your DJI warranty if you were to swap cameras on your Mavic 2.

If you have swapped cameras on your DJI Mavic 2 drone, let us know how you made out!
