Normally, fixed-wing drones when they have completed a mapping or surveying assignment land on their bellies on the ground. The Aeromapper Talon Amphibious drone ads another option to possible landing sites, namely water.

As shown in the video below, the fully waterproof Aeromapper Talon Amphibious drone can be launched by hand from shore or a boat. The fixed-wing drone can stay up in the air for two hours at a time on a single charge. the unmanned aircraft system can be flown with a remote controller or fully autonomously. It has a range of about 19 miles and will return home if it loses the radio connection.
“The Aeromapper Talon Amphibious is fully waterproof, externally and internally. Even if filled up completely with water internally, it won’t sink, it won’t suffer any damage. Each component is waterproof and modular, minimizing maintenance costs. This redundant approach that guarantees repeatability and dependability,” it says on their website.
Fixed-wing drone is equipped with a downward-facing camera that captures 20-megapixel still images or 4K @ 30 fps video footage. Video footage can be transmitted real-time to the drone operator over a distance of 9 to 12 miles. If an optional parabolic antenna is used this range can be extended to 25 miles. Forward-facing camera with a panning option can be added to the drone to allow the pilot to see what’s ahead.
The Aeromapper Talon Amphibious drone has a wingspan of 6.6 feet and weighs 7.9 lbs. The aircraft has a top speed of 53 mph and is made from carbon fiber-reinforced EPO (expanded polyolefin) foam.
Completing the mission the fixed-wing Aeromapper Talon Amphibious drone can belly land on the water. The company claims that it’s the only unmanned aircraft system that is able to do so. Alternatively, a parachute can be used for vertical landings on ground surfaces.
