OpenSky drone safety app keeping Australia’s drone pilots safe

Australia’s leader in drone deliveries, Wing Aviation, is working with the Australian government to keep drone pilots safe and flying legally with their new app, OpenSky. The app is set to replace the ‘Can I Fly There?’ app created by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). This is the first of many apps planned by Wing Aviation and CASA in preparation to keep Australian skies safe.

The app launched on the Google Play Store, App Store, and on the web last week, making it the first of many CASA approved drone safety apps to hit the market.

The OpenSky app provides pilots flying recreationally, commercially, or under the ReOC to see current no-fly zones, restricted airspace, and temporary flight restrictions. Entering the intended flight location provides the pilot with a pin displaying the flight status and flight zones overlayed on the map. Clicking on the pin provides the pilot with a list of controlled aerodromes, hospitals, and helipads in the area along with a checklist and tips to keep the flight safe and legal.

OpenSky is the result in CASA pivoting its app development approach to approving drone safety apps created by developers using the Digital RPAS platform. The platform provides us a glimpse into the future of drone flights in Australia. OpenSky and similar apps using the platform will be able to integrate with CASA’s drone registration system, submit flight authorization requests, automatically approve flights within 3NM of controlled aerodromes, and will integrate with the proposed drone traffic management system.
