Drone helps ground crews put out spot fire in Chalkyitsik Complex

Romeo Durscher, DJI’s Director of Public Safety Integration, shared a short video on Facebook that shows how a drone helped ground crews put out a spot fire in the Chalkyitsik Complex, Alaska. The aerial view that an unmanned aircraft provides, helps firefighters locate a small fire in dense vegetation. Small fires like these can be hard to spot from the ground and that is when drones can come to the rescue.

Drone helps ground crews locate spot fire in Chalkyitsik Complex

The video was released by the Alaska DNR – Division of Forestry (DOF) on Facebook. It shows how ground crews successfully put out a spot fire in the dense vegetation of the Chalkyitsik Complex. Due to the unusually warm weather this region has been dealing with, several wildfires have happened over the last few weeks. You can find updated information on wildfires in Alaska here.

The following message was posted with the video:

Drone, ground crews team up on Chalkyitsik Complex spot fire.

This short video clip from BLM drone pilot Joe Don Morton shows just how fast firefighters on the ground can extinguish spot fires located by drones, also known as unmanned aerial systems, that are assigned to the fire.

We’ve added the freeze frame and red circles to the video to help you see the firefighters, one with a hand tool and one with a hose, who put the spot fire out.
