US drone maker Skydio says the Miami Beach Police Department (MBPD) plans to use its new X10 drones to monitor spring break 2024 crowds. The MBPD has previously used Skydio drones during large-scale public events such as Art Week 2023 and New Year’s Eve to help protect event attendees and keep the community at large safe.
Fed up with “unruly crowds, lawless behavior, and a string of violent acts” in recent years, the City of Miami Beach is anyway implementing tough new steps to put an end to spring break. In addition to drone use, safety measures will include bag checks, restricted beach access, DUI checkpoints, license plate readers, and heightened police enforcement for consumption of alcohol in public, drug possession, and violent behavior.
The periods between March 7-10 and March 14-17 are expected to generate the largest spring break crowds this year. However, the entire month of March has been designated as a high-impact period in Miami Beach, which will result in additional efforts being taken for traffic, staffing, and public safety.
The MBPD, at present, has a fleet of Skydio S2+, X2, and X10 drones that it uses for traffic monitoring, accident reconstruction, and overwatch for large-scale public events.
Anthony Loperfido, sergeant of police with the technical operations unit at MBPD, says, “At the Miami Beach Police Department, keeping the public safe is our number one priority. We are employing every resource available to us and advanced technology like Skydio’s X10 drone is a critical part of that. These tools allow us to work quickly, more efficiently, and remotely to increase public safety in Miami Beach.”
