Why AVSS ISO 21384-3 safety compliance matters for drones

AVSS made history in 2022 by becoming the first company globally to achieve ISO 21384-3 certification for uncrewed drones. Two years later, its pioneering efforts continue to set the standard for drone safety, influencing regulatory frameworks and inspiring advancements in the rapidly growing industry.

Established in 2017, AVSS identified early the pressing need for safety and reliability in drone operations. “As drones become more widely adopted, the need for standardized safety practices becomes critical to ensure their safe integration into enterprise markets,” says Omar Husain, integration engineer at AVSS.

Recognizing these challenges, AVSS joined the ASTM F38 committee to help shape safety standards for the industry. The release of ISO 21384-3 in 2019 set a benchmark for safety, outlining comprehensive guidelines for drone manufacturers and operators. However, the absence of certification bodies to validate compliance posed a significant challenge for companies eager to align with these standards.

This changed when Altomaxx Technologies, another Canadian company, emerged as the first certification body for ISO 21384-3 in 2020. AVSS partnered with Altomaxx in 2021 to pursue the rigorous certification process, which involved audits, quality checks, and operational refinements.

In 2022, after extensive evaluations, AVSS achieved ISO 21384-3 certification. This milestone not only validated the company’s commitment to safety but also strengthened its market position, enabling it to secure contracts for innovative projects such as testing heavy-lift drones for avalanche prevention.

Beyond commercial advantages, AVSS’s achievement continues to contribute to the broader goal of standardizing drone operations globally. As the industry expands, universally accepted safety protocols are becoming critical.

“This certification is a testament to AVSS’s dedication to advancing drone technology responsibly,” Husain adds. “We’re proud to be shaping a safer future for the industry.”
