Drone maker DJI is planning a new HQ in Shenzhen

Chinese tech giant DJI is gearing up for another milestone in its home city of Shenzhen. The company plans to construct a new global headquarters for its intelligent aviation systems division in the prestigious Shenzhen Bay Super Headquarters Base.

Announced by the Shenzhen municipal government, the plan includes DJI acquiring a 15,658-square-meter plot in Nanshan District, with a total construction area of 188,000 square meters. The state-of-the-art facility will encompass research and development (R&D), management offices, and demonstration spaces, solidifying DJI’s role as a key player in China’s burgeoning low-altitude economy.

Shenzhen’s Super Headquarters Base, spanning 117 hectares, is a visionary waterfront development aimed at attracting leading enterprises. DJI’s presence as an anchor tenant underscores the city’s ambition to dominate the low-altitude economy — a sector valued at $93 billion currently and projected to soar to $137 billion by 2026.

The low-altitude economy revolves around activities conducted below 1,000 meters, such as drone deliveries and flying taxis. Shenzhen, often referred to as China’s “drone capital,” has spearheaded the industry by introducing innovative regulations and pledging substantial infrastructure investments.

DJI’s new HQ will be exclusively used by the company and its subsidiaries, with a 30-year land-use term emphasizing the city’s strategic partnership with the drone giant.

DJI’s commitment to its home city comes amid a challenging business climate. The company continues to face allegations of military ties, resulting in US sanctions. In October, DJI filed a lawsuit against the US Department of Defense, disputing its inclusion on a blacklist. Despite these hurdles, DJI remains a cornerstone of Shenzhen’s tech ecosystem.

The company’s current headquarters, the iconic Sky City, opened in 2022. Featuring twin towers connected by a skybridge, it reflects DJI’s innovative spirit. The new headquarters will also undoubtedly enhance the company’s ability to innovate, serving as a hub for collaboration and technological breakthroughs.

All in all, DJI’s investment in Shenzhen signals confidence in both its future and the city’s role in shaping global aviation.
