DJI Flip: A all-in-one drone for pilots of all skill levels

The consumer drone producer announced today its newest camera drone to its lineup, the DJI Flip. Taking the best features of the DJI Mini and Neo drones, it might just be the perfect drone to give to anyone, no matter how experienced they are with flying a camera drone.

What do you get if you take the smart, easy-to-use functions of the Neo and throw in the camera of a Mini 4 Pro? It’s the DJI Flip. Sporting many of the same features as both drones, the Flip features a powerful new camera, beefed-up specs, longer flight time, all while being able to be controlled using your voice, easy to use, and sporting covered rotors for safe operations. To round that out, the DJI Flip is still less than 249 grams, skirting training and registration regulations in most nations.

Whether you’re flying using your voice or with an RC 2 controller, the Flip can fold up for easy carrying while on the go.

Neo-like features

Being a drone designed for those on the go while on adventures, the Flip’s defining features are its foldable, fully encased rotors. Similar to the Neo, the encased rotors make the drone safe to fly indoors and around objects as a less skilled pilot. Any bumps into objects will limit any damage taken by the drone.

Given that the drone can be controlled with nothing but your voice, using obstacle avoidance sensors and AI to follow you. In that case, it is just like a larger Neo. However, unlike the Neo, the DJI Flip features obstacle avoidance sensors to support ActiveTrack 4.0, Spotlight, and Point of Interest modes.

The Flip also sees a return of the one-tap control button, allowing users to switch between modes and access quick flight options like Dronie, Circle, Rocket, Spotlight, Helix, and Boomerang.

Mini 4 Pro-like features

Outside of the voice-focused control options and enclosed rotor blades, the rest of the functionality mirrors closer to the Mini 4 Pro. First is the camera, with a similar 1/1.3 CMOS sensor that allows you to capture up to 4K/60 video with 4K/100 slow-motion options as well. For stills, the Flip will allow you to capture 48 MP photos.

You’ll also get all the standard video codecs and features you’ll expect from a DJI drone at this point, including 10-bit D-Log M, Dual Native ISO, HDR imaging, and 2.7K vertical crop for social media.

When you don’t want to fly hands-free using your phone, you’ll be able to pair the DJI Flip with an RC-N3 or RC 2 controller and receive O4 transmission support for 1080p/60 streaming and high-speed transfer rates. So for those adventure vloggers, you’ll be able to switch between the two when you need full control over the flying experience.

While flying the Flip, you’ll see nearly double the flight time compared to the DJI Neo. The intelligent flight batteries support up to 31 minutes of flight time. Less than the Mini 4, but I mean, have you seen the size of those rotors? Massive.

Pricing

The DJI Flip by itself will set you back $439. If you’re looking for a controller to add to it, bundling it with the RC 2 will increase the price to $639. Finally, getting the DJI Flip Fly More Bundle, with two extra batteries, propellers, a charging hub, and a shoulder bag, will retail for $779.

The DJI Flip is available to purchase online at the DJI store and on Amazon. It is also available at retailers across the country.
