DJI has announced details for its next product release with an event called “Roll With It.” According to leakers, the event will release a new gimbal, the RS 4 Mini, which will feature the vision-only based side of DJI’s Focus unit.
DJI announced Thursday morning that it will unveil a new product on February 20 at 8:00 A.M. ET. Like all previous announcements, we don’t know for certain what it will be, but the image shows a small camera system that lights up with a green ring around the lens.
If there were no leaks connected with this release, you might think this could be a new Osmo Action camera or a competitor to Logitech’s Mevo live streaming camera. However, leaks show that this is likely the announcement of the RS 4 Mini with a new vision-tracking sensor.
The RS 4, DJI’s mass-market handheld gimbal, introduced a plug-and-play Lidar focus tracker that, while designed to be used with the gimbal, could be equipped onto any camera system. The tracker also features a camera that can be used to add focus tracking capabilities to the camera it is plugged into, bringing many of the same tracking functionalities seen in first-party DJI products to the entire camera market.
Long-known DJI leaker OstaLV shared images shortly after DJI’s announcement showing low-res product photos of the RS 4 Mini. We’ll have to wait and see exactly what upgrades the RS 4 Mini will receive when details are announced. From the photos, not much looks to have changed, but looks can always be deceiving.
What I’m expecting to be the main purpose of the release will be the vision tracker, which will likely be just the camera from the LiDAR system, minus the LiDAR. This will give users the ability to have focus tracking on people and objects on any camera. However, this will likely be cheaper as it doesn’t require the costly LiDAR sensor.
DJI also plans to release more products on the 18th, these are expected to be new smartphone gimbals, the OM7 and OM7 Pro.
