Today, DJI announced the new RS 4 Mini, its latest full-feature camera gimbal for smaller cameras and smartphones. Announced with the RS 4 Mini is the new Intelligent Tracking Module that, once connected to the gimbal, can add basic ActiveTracking and gesture control to any camera.
DJI now has three different solutions for adding ActiveTrack or gesture controls to your camera, no matter if you have a smartphone or you’re using a RED cinema camera. This starts with the Multifunctional Module, also released this week, which adds gesture controls to native camera apps on smartphones with the Osmo Mobile 7, and ends with the Focus Pro LiDAR module on the RS 4 Pro, which can do not just ActiveTrack but also autofocus using the built-in LiDAR sensor.
The Intelligent Tracking Module sits nicely in between these two. While the OM7P gains its ActiveTrack features from the DJI Mimo app, there’s no app for Sony or Canon cameras to access those features. The Intelligent Tracking Module can provide basic ActiveTrack features while using the PF and PTF follow modes on the gimbal.
The module can simply be attached using the magnetic contact on the top of the gimbal arm and receives power directly from the gimbal. You can also use the module with the larger RS 4 and RS 4 Pro gimbals using the included adapter plate, which plugs into the USB-C port on the gimbal’s arm.
Gestures are also supported with the Intelligent Tracking Module. Users can start and stop tracking by holding up their palm, start and stop recordings while holding up a “V” with their fingers, and finally reframe their position by holding “double Ls” with both hands.
RS 4 Mini receives flagship upgrades
The RS 4 Mini receives several features from its bigger RS 4 and RS 4 Pro siblings, including second-generation quick locks for quicker setup and storage processes. The RS 4 Mini also incorporates Teflon interlayers with a fine-tuning knob for more precise balancing.
The RS 4 Mini is designed for cameras lighter than two kilograms or for smartphones. DJI even has a special phone clamp that can replace the camera plate. These plates can also be quickly switched to a vertical shooting position.
Overall, the RS 4 Mini brings the power of a fully featured flagship gimbal to a smaller and cheaper package and is a well-deserved upgrade from its predecessor.
The RS 4 Mini can be purchased for $369, a decent increase over the RS 3 Mini at $279. The Intelligent Tracking Module can be purchased separately for $69 but is only supported on the RS 4 series of gimbals.
