DJI Mini 4 Pro drone gains MSDK support for automated, custom flights

Huge news for DJI Mini 4 Pro users! DJI has rolled out a major update to its Mobile SDK (MSDK) V5, unlocking powerful third-party app integrations for the popular sub-250-gram drone. This game-changing update means users can now access advanced flight automation, custom waypoints, and precision mapping through apps like Litchi, DroneDeploy, and Drone Harmony — bringing pro-level functionality to an already impressive drone.

The Mobile SDK is a software development kit that provides developers with access to the core functionalities of DJI drones. It streamlines the application development process by managing lower-level operations such as flight stabilization, battery management, signal transmission, and communication. This allows developers to focus on creating innovative applications without delving into the complexities of robotics and embedded systems.

The Mini 4 Pro, a travel-friendly drone renowned for its 4K/60fps HDR video and omnidirectional obstacle sensing, has now become even more versatile. With MSDK support, developers can integrate advanced functionalities into the drone, enhancing its utility for both hobbyists and professionals. Third-party applications like Litchi, Maven, and Drone Harmony can now offer features such as automated flight paths, advanced tracking, and enhanced mapping capabilities.

Controller compatibility: DJI RC-N2 vs. DJI RC 2

It’s important to note that to utilize the MSDK with the Mini 4 Pro, users must operate the drone with the DJI RC-N2 controller. Currently, DJI has not released MSDK support for the DJI RC 2 controller.

The DJI RC-N2 is a budget-friendly remote controller that connects to a smartphone for usage. While it lacks a built-in screen, it offers a great flying experience and is compatible with the MSDK, enabling users to leverage third-party applications.

On the other hand, the DJI RC 2 comes with a Full HD screen and built-in storage, providing immediate use without the need for a smartphone connection. However, due to the absence of MSDK support, users of the RC 2 are currently unable to benefit from third-party app integrations.

MSDK expansion to other DJI drones

In addition to the Mini 4 Pro, DJI has extended MSDK support to the Matrice 4D and Matrice 4TD drones. These models are designed for professional cinematography and industrial applications, respectively. The Matrice 4D is equipped with a full-frame Zenmuse X9 gimbal camera, offering exceptional image quality for filmmakers. The Matrice 4TD, tailored for industrial use, integrates thermal imaging capabilities, making it ideal for inspections and search-and-rescue operations.

Third-party developers, including Litchi, have announced plans to incorporate support for the Matrice 4D and 4TD drones in upcoming software builds, further enhancing the functionality of these platforms.
