The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) announced earlier this month its partnership with drone show company Nova Sky Stories to bring a fleet of 10,000 drones over the skies of Abu Dhabi. This will mark it as the largest fleet to ever perform a drone light show.
DCT announced its partnership with Nova Sky Stories to produce a series of 10,000 strong drone shows in Abu Dhabi in the near future. The purpose of the shows will be to promote Abu Dhabi as the home of innovation in the realm of culture and entertainment. However, getting Abu Dhabi in more headlines I’m sure works too.
The 10,000 light drones in this show will beat the previous record holding of just shy of 8,000 drones during a show in China last December.
“By harnessing innovative technologies, we are finding new and immersive ways to share our vision and culture with the world,” His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi said in a statement. “These visual spectacles reinforce Abu Dhabi’s leading position in entertainment innovation, delivering experiential and memorable moments for all.”
Nova Sky Stories is an OG in the drone show game, having its roots dating back to 2007 as Ascending Technologies. This was followed by an acquisition by Intel, then the eventual purchase by Kimbal Musk, brother of Elon Musk, after seeing them perform at Burning Man.
Breaking world records isn’t new for Nova Sky; the company previously held records when having just a few hundred was jaw-dropping. The company also took part in the first-ever drone show in 2012.
“Abu Dhabi is at the forefront of embracing innovation and will have the largest fleet of the most advanced light drones in the world for storytelling and entertainment,” Kimbal Musk, CEO of Nova Sky Stories said in a statement. “Nova empowers the world’s greatest artists and musicians to bring their art to the sky and we cannot wait to show the world what is possible with a fleet this size.”
The partnership includes the Abu Dhabi company Analog, to help with crafting that story. No dates have been shared yet for when the shows will begin; however, the partnership will last multiple years with several performances planned.
