As US Space Command prepares to make Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, its permanent home, the city is poised to play an even bigger role in the nation’s aerospace and defense ecosystem. The relocation, which is expected to bring about 1,400 jobs and significant federal investment, is already fueling a wave of new partnerships and innovation in what many call Rocket City.
SkyfireAI has announced partnerships with the US Space & Rocket Center (USSRC) and WS Darley & Co. to advance real-world drone training, improve public safety readiness, and expand STEM education opportunities. The collaboration aims to take advantage of Huntsville’s growing importance as a center for defense and space leadership.
Under the new agreement, SkyfireAI will use the Rocket Center’s unique facilities to provide hands-on, scenario-based drone training for first responders, military personnel, Department of War teams, and critical infrastructure operators. These training scenarios will go beyond classroom learning and take place in environments that mirror real-world missions.
Facilities at the Rocket Center include simulated forest crash zones, helicopters, railcars, planes, and a body of water designed for search and rescue exercises. There is also a massive 150-by-150-foot outdoor flight cage, standing 50 feet tall, that allows for safe and controlled flight operations. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) test lanes will also be built to help evaluate and benchmark drone pilot skills.
SkyfireAI will also showcase AI-powered, multi-drone operations at the site, demonstrating how teams of drones can work together in swarm scenarios to support faster and smarter decision-making. The company believes these demonstrations will be critical for public safety agencies, infrastructure operators, and national defense planners as they look to adopt more autonomous drone systems.
The partnership will also have a strong educational component. SkyfireAI and the Rocket Center will work together to introduce new drone curriculum into Space Camp and Aviation Challenge programs, giving students hands-on exposure to unmanned systems alongside traditional aviation and spaceflight training.
“For decades, the US Space & Rocket Center has inspired students and professionals alike through space and aviation training,” says Dr. Kay Taylor, vice president of education at the Rocket Center. “Now, with SkyfireAI’s expertise in unmanned systems, we are proud to expand that mission into the rapidly growing field of drones — empowering first responders and the next generation of aerospace leaders.”
As part of the collaboration, WS Darley & Co. will provide equipment including Vantage Robotics Vesper and Trace drones, Autel’s Max 4T and Dragonfish platforms, Parrot UKR aircraft, and DroneTag detection systems. These systems will be used in training and demonstration flights so agencies can gain confidence in how they perform in real missions.
Matt Sloane, founder and chief strategy officer of SkyfireAI, finds the timing of these partnerships is perfect, stating that the announcement that the US Space Command headquarters will relocate to Huntsville underscores the city’s legacy and future as a national space and defense hub.
