The future of cargo delivery may have just taken a significant leap forward. California-based Elroy Air says it has successfully completed the first fully autonomous, uncrewed flights authorized under the Federal Aviation Administration’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP), marking a milestone for commercial heavy-cargo drone operations in the US. The achievement moves the company one step closer to deploying its Chaparral aircraft for real-world logistics missions across the country.
Unlike the small drones commonly used for inspections or photography, Chaparral is designed to haul serious freight. The hybrid-electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft can carry more than 500 pounds of cargo over distances of up to 450 miles without requiring a runway or charging infrastructure, making it particularly attractive for industries operating in remote locations.
The week-long flight campaign took place in late August at Houma-Terrebonne Airport in Louisiana, one of the nation’s busiest helicopter hubs supporting offshore energy operations. During the demonstrations, Chaparral flew autonomously with no pilot onboard while operating under air traffic control oversight — an important benchmark for integrating large autonomous aircraft into the National Airspace System.
The flights were conducted in partnership with LIFTOff Louisiana and aviation services provider Bristow Group. Throughout the testing, the aircraft transported a variety of real-world cargo, including packages, medical supplies, spare parts, food, toolboxes, and emergency water containers.
For Elroy Air, the demonstration wasn’t simply about proving the aircraft could fly. It was about showing that autonomous cargo drones can safely perform practical logistics missions in environments where speed and reliability matter.
“Our mission is moving heavy cargo autonomously, safely, and at scale,” CEO Dr. Andrew Clare says, adding that the company continues to work closely with the FAA and state officials to help establish the framework for future commercial autonomous cargo operations.
The eVTOL Integration Pilot Program was created under President Donald Trump’s “Unleashing American Drone Dominance” Executive Order to accelerate the safe integration of advanced air mobility aircraft into US airspace. The initiative pairs aircraft developers with federal, state, and local agencies to gather operational data that could shape future regulations governing autonomous aviation.
Louisiana transportation officials describe the demonstration as exactly the kind of real-world testing the program was designed to encourage.
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford also stresses the flights will help regulators understand how next-generation cargo aircraft could expand delivery options nationwide while strengthening logistics infrastructure.
Bristow Group, which has decades of experience transporting workers and equipment to offshore energy platforms, sees immediate commercial potential. According to Executive Vice President Dave Stepanek, customers throughout the Gulf Coast are looking for faster, lower-risk ways to move critical cargo between industrial sites and offshore facilities — an application Chaparral is specifically designed to support.
While commercial logistics is the initial focus, Elroy Air has also built Chaparral with defense and humanitarian missions in mind. The aircraft’s ability to transport heavy payloads without traditional airport infrastructure could make it valuable for military resupply operations, disaster relief efforts, and emergency response in areas where roads or runways are unavailable.
The company says market interest is already strong. Elroy Air reports a commercial demand pipeline exceeding 1,400 aircraft, representing more than $5 billion in potential future revenue from logistics and aviation customers.
Manufacturing is also moving ahead. Defense contractor Kratos Defense & Security Solutions will serve as the exclusive US manufacturer of Chaparral, producing the aircraft at its expanding Sacramento, California, facility. The first production aircraft are expected to roll off the line before the end of 2026.
