Powerus unveils Guardian-3 fully autonomous drone interceptor

Powerus is taking another step toward autonomous counter-drone defense with the introduction of its Guardian-3 interceptor, a new system designed to operate fully autonomously.

The US defense technology company has unveiled the third generation of its Guardian counter-drone family, offering an early look at a system designed to reduce the workload on human operators.

The biggest change is autonomy. While the previous-generation Guardian-2 introduced semi-autonomous operation, the Guardian-3 features a new design built for fully autonomous operation. That marks a significant shift in how Powerus envisions its interceptor working, with the goal of requiring less direct operator involvement.

Powerus has not yet disclosed the Guardian-3’s technical specifications, operational capabilities, or expected availability. The company said it would share additional details at a later date, so questions about its performance and deployment timeline remain unanswered.

“Every generation of Guardian has taken more of the load off the operator,” says Brett Velicovich, Powerus cofounder and president. “Guardian-3 is the next step, and we’re glad to show people where it’s headed.”

For the counter-drone market, the announcement reflects a broader push toward systems that can respond to aerial threats with less human intervention. As drones become more accessible and increasingly relevant to military operations, defense companies are developing interceptors and detection systems intended to help military personnel deal with potential threats more efficiently.

However, fully autonomous operation alone does not establish how quickly a system can identify, engage, or neutralize an incoming drone. Powerus has yet to release enough technical information to assess those capabilities or determine how the Guardian-3 will fit into existing air-defense networks.

Powerus builds autonomous and unmanned systems for high-risk environments, with its portfolio spanning autonomous air and maritime platforms, heavy-lift systems, mission equipment, training, and support. The company also operates US-based manufacturing capabilities.

The Guardian-3 announcement adds another contender to the evolving counter-drone technology landscape, but its practical significance will depend on the capabilities Powerus reveals next, including how its autonomy works in real-world conditions and when the interceptor could become available.

For now, the company has introduced its next-generation concept. The performance details that could determine its place in military counter-drone operations are still to come.
