Elios 3 drone now detects over 14 flammable gasses

Switzerland-based Flyability has introduced a new safety tool for its flagship drone, the Elios 3, to further enhance its performance in confined spaces. Partnering with NevadaNano, a leader in gas detection technology, Flyability announced the addition of a flammable gas sensor that provides real-time detection of over 14 common combustible gasses.

This sensor will give Elios 3 pilots critical, live feedback about hazardous gasses, allowing them to make more informed decisions in dangerous environments.

The flammable gas sensor can identify gasses in confined spaces and measure concentration levels with impressive accuracy. It boasts a resolution of 0.1% lower explosive limit (LEL), offering pilots precise and timely alerts for potential dangers.

However, it’s important to note that while the sensor improves safety, it does not make the drone ATEX-certified — a certification that applies to equipment safe for explosive environments. Instead, the sensor serves as a valuable tool that helps pilots assess risks, adding an extra layer of protection to existing safety protocols.

Patrick Thévoz, Flyability’s CEO, emphasizes the significance of this development. “The new sensor is a way for us to help Elios 3 pilots fly more safely. When our drones enter hazardous spaces, they can encounter combustible atmospheres undetectable from the outside. This flammable gas sensor allows us to give pilots real-time awareness when they fly in complex environments and make their missions safer,” he says.

Karl Roberts, European sales director at NevadaNano, highlights the sensor’s precision, explaining, “By combining our state-of-the-art sensor with Flyability’s cutting-edge drone technology, we’re setting new safety standards for high-risk industries, ensuring that workers can rely on precise real-time data in some of the most dangerous confined spaces.”

The flammable gas sensor for Elios 3 will be available by the end of 2024.
