At today’s DJI event, Michael Perry, Managing Director of DJI North America told us that people are finding new ways to use drones that even DJI had not thought of. Most people are familiar with insurance inspectors, solar panel installation companies and real estate professionals using drones but sometimes people find new ways to use them.
Collecting whale snot
Such is the case with marine biologists. Scientists from Ocean Alliance use expensive DJI Inspires to collect whale snot. To do so they fly the drone through the spray from the whale when it exhales. This way they collect the mucus-like substance that’s exhaled out of the blowholes on the tops of whales’ heads. The snot provides a lot of information on the whale’s health and diet.
