DJI’s fixed-wing VTOL drone in action plus more photos and specifications

This morning, we learned from two important sources new information about DJI’s fixed-wing VTOL drone. As you have seen there is a photo of the actual drone flying, but we now also have more detailed photos and information on the various cameras that can be used with this drone. A lot of the content in the slides below is in Chinese and we are in the process of translating that.

Update: DJI has informed us that the drone pictured in this post is NOT an official DJI product. More information here.

More details on the DJI VTOL drone emerge

In addition to our post from yesterday, we now have more information on the DJI VTOL drone. It seems that there has been a presentation from DJI about this new unmanned fixed-wing aerial vehicle from the Chinese drone manufacturer. A lot of the information is in Chinese and we are in the process of getting that translated but we did not want to delay sharing the photos with you.

In the photos, you can see that the drone has four propellers to provide vertical lift and one main and larger propeller to provide forward motion. It seems that the propellers and the arms on which they are attached are made from carbon fiber, but we cannot be sure at this point. In the photo of the ‘cockpit’ of the drone, you can clearly see components with the DJI logo displayed. According to the information we have this drone is clearly marketed to the enterprise or industrial customers for mapping services and the like.

Update from 9:47 am EST

More information is coming out as we publish this article. Just now from @OsitaLV:

“There is a 2nd generation of DJI VTOL drone has been revealed. What you saw just now is the 1st gen. The 2nd gen model is an all-wing VTOL drone with cowling for gimbal camera protection. More faster than 1st gen. It also added the Iridium satellite transmitter for radio link.”

“2018.2.26-2018.3.1 – We may see something new.”

It is unclear at this point if the slides and photos below show the first or second generation of the fixed-wing VTOL drone from DJI. We will be watching this closely and update the post accordingly.
