The Tinyhawk S is FPV awesomeness. -Fly, crash, repeat…

It is no secret that I love my original Emax Tinyhawk, but the new Tinyhawk S takes it up a notch. The original is a great drone for flying both indoors and out. Emax did all the little things right when they made it. My only wish was that it could handle a 2S battery. Now it can and it is an absolute dream. This is the best beginner drone out there, but I wouldn’t stop there. If you fly FPV then you need this drone. Yes, it’s that good and it won’t break the bank starting at $99.

Emax Tinyhawk S

Emax made the perfect beginner FPV drone with the Tinyhawk S. It is lightweight, durable and powerful. You can fly it indoors or you can fly it outside. Instead of copying the frames of similar 75 mm quads Emax designed their own and it is awesome. Rarely will I lose a prop and it is hard to break. Durability is key when you are flying FPV and this thing can handle a crash.

The Tinyhawk 2 frame looks the same as the original at first glance but there are two important differences. The struts are beefier and the camera angle can be adjusted. Both of those are little changes that can make a big difference. Tilting the camera angle will make it easier to fly faster and beefier struts mean fewer repairs. The weakest points on the frame are the struts around the motors and they just got reinforcements.

I’d suggest adding a little bit of hot glue to the back of the camera. It tends to get knocked loose after a hard crash. It is easy to put back into place, but if you crash as much as I do it can be a time saver. I also recommend pulling the two antennas out the back for slightly better range and reception.

Tinyhawk S Specs

The Tinyhawk S has some important tweaks under the hood to be able to handle the 2S power. The flight controller is a MatekF411 board with a built-in D8/D16 Frsky receiver. That makes it easier to bind as you won’t have to hold the button when powering on. You can press it after plugging in. Bind it in D8 mode if you can, some of these little all-in-one FC have minor issues in D16 mode.

Also built-into the FC is the BL Heli 4-in-1 5 amp ESC. That along with new 0802 15,500 2S capable brushless motors make this a micro beast. These motors are more powerful and more efficient. That means strap on a 2S for more power or a 1S for more flight time.

It still uses the same 600 TVL camera and 25 mW VTX. I was hoping for switchable to 200 mW but it is still pretty solid. Like the previous Tinyhawk, you can access the menu and change settings via smart audio. The VTX is locked when you get it, so make sure you unlock it before you fly. I didn’t and I used smart audio to switch to Raceband 1. Then I couldn’t see it because the channel was locked. Hold down the VTX button and plug in the battery to unlock it and you’ll be good to go.

The new Tinyhawk S will ship with a 1S 450 mah battery as well as a 2S 300 mah battery. Both use JST-2.0 connectors and you won’t be daisy chaining your 1S batteries together to get it to fly 2S. Emax even includes a 1S/2S multi-charger. Emax goes the distance that other manufacturers don’t. This Emax Tinyhawk 2S also ships with two sets of four-blade propellers so you can turtle mode with ease. Like the original, you’ll get a nice little carrying case to make transporting it easier.

Should you buy a Tinyhawk S?

Well, if you haven’t figured it out yet, I love this little drone. It is a blast to fly. It is perfect for a backyard, the park or even around the house on a rainy day. If you are wondering how it compares to the Mobula 7 or the Eachine Trashcan then know those two are gathering dust. While they may be more powerful, they aren’t nearly as durable or agile as the Tinyhawk S.

The Tinyhawk S is better is so many ways. You can pick one up from Banggood for $99 or spend an extra $10 and get it faster from Amazon.
