[Update, April 29]: The new DJI Mini 4K drone is now released and available to buy.
DJI has quietly announced the release date of a new 4K mini camera drone for beginners: DJI Mini 4K.
DJI Mini 4K arrives on Amazon on April 29 at 9 a.m. EDT. Based on the image above, the new DJI drone appears identical to the Mini 2 SE, which recently saw its price drop to $279 — the lowest ever for any drone in the DJI Mini series.
We also know that DJI has requested the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for a Class II permissive change to the Mini 2 SE, allowing it to bump up the sub-250-gram drone’s camera from 2.7K to 4K.
So, in all likelihood, the new DJI drone will be an upgraded version of the Mini 2 SE with features including a 4K camera, 10km video transmission, intelligent flight modes, 31-min max flight time, and 38kph (Level 5) wind resistance.
What we don’t know is the price point at which DJI will launch its new drone. The Mini 3, which is the next model up, costs $410 with the RC-N1 remote controller and $549 with the DJI RC 5.5-inch HD display remote controller. The Mini 3 can shoot dazzling 4K/30fps HDR videos with true-to-life colors, both during the day and at night, and click 48MP stills. To justify the tier difference, the new entry-level drone from DJI will need to stay under the $350 mark.
While we only have to wait until next week to get more details, it’s worth mentioning that the discontinued Mini 2 could also shoot in 4K.
