US Air Force, DRL join forces for Miami drone racing event

The Drone Racing League (DRL) is taking its partnership with the United States Air Force to new heights. Together, they’ve announced the DRL US Air Force Miami Invitational, a drone racing event set to debut on February 1, 2025, at 7 p.m. ET at loanDepot Park, home of the Miami Marlins.

This marks the first major event since DRL’s acquisition by Infinite Reality (iR), a company focused on AI, spatial computing, and immersive tech. The DRL US Air Force Miami Invitational will transform the ballpark into a real-life video game, where top drone pilots will race through a dazzling aerial course. Spectators can expect high-octane action, with drones hitting speeds over 90 mph as they tackle sharp turns, steep dives, and gravity-defying maneuvers.

The US Air Force says it is presenting a DRL Championship event to inspire tech-savvy fans and future recruits. The event is a unique opportunity to showcase the vast career paths available within the Air Force, especially in STEM fields.

As Barry Dickey, chief of strategic marketing at Air Force Recruiting Services, puts it, “The US Air Force is proud to serve as a catalyst for technology careers. With a shared investment in future STEM leaders, our partnership with the Drone Racing League empowers a new generation of pilots and engineers to push the boundaries of technology, defense, and aviation. Together, our first-ever US Air Force presented DRL race will spark innovation and guide tech trailblazers toward exceptional professional paths.”

The Miami Invitational promises to be a heart-pounding spectacle, as 10,000 fans watch the world’s best drone pilots zip through a 3D maze of lights. We’re also told that two-time DRL World Champion and commentator Evan “Headsup” Turner will take center stage as the US Air Force Team Pilot, leading a field of 12 pilots through the high-tech racecourse.
