Spexi raises $11.5M to scale ultra-high-res drone photos library

Spexi, a Canada-based drone imagery powerhouse, has closed a $11.5 million Series A funding round led by Blockchange Ventures. With this injection of capital, Spexi plans to rope in more pilots to capture and deliver data-rich, ultra-high-resolution drone imagery to both the public and private sectors.

Traditional Earth imagery relies on satellites and airplanes, which deliver lower-resolution images, cost more, and are updated infrequently. Spexi’s drone network flips the script by providing data 900 times more detailed than satellite imagery at a fraction of the cost. This breakthrough is a game-changer for industries that depend on real-time, high-quality data, including evacuation planning, flood monitoring, and wildfire prevention.

Since its seed funding in late 2022, Spexi has completed an impressive 50,000 drone missions, imaging over 1.2 million acres across 140 cities in four countries: the US, Canada, the UK, and Mexico. Spexi’s innovative “Fly to Earn” blockchain platform pays its 5,000+ onboarded drone pilots to capture ultra-high-resolution images, transforming how data is collected for industries like AI, insurance, and urban planning.

Spexi’s vast dataset, composed of 3.7 million high-resolution images, is proving invaluable for training AI systems and powering futuristic applications like autonomous systems and AR/VR gaming. The higher the resolution, the more precise the AI solutions, making Spexi’s imagery a critical tool for advancing smart infrastructure and environmental monitoring.

“With our ability to scale rapidly and deliver superior data with near zero emissions, I am proud that we are not only supporting essential government and emergency response services at a fraction of the usual cost, but also driving the future of AI and metaverse-powered technologies across industries globally,” says Bill Lakeland, CEO of Spexi.

Ken Seiff, managing partner of Blockchange Ventures, adds, “Spexi has defined a new category of business by pairing better and cheaper drone imagery with the blockchain’s ability to ensure image integrity. Spexi is not simply replacing existing satellite imaging use cases, but opening entirely new markets in geospatial, insurance, AI, public safety, government, gaming, and more.”
