Earlier this month, GoPro teased its release of a second-generation GoPro Max 360 camera, but since then, the company has been quiet. However, a marketplace listing for what was an early prototype gives some life back to the hype building for this new camera.
Found by NotebookCheck and a Reddit poster, the listing shows images of what it claims to be the prototype for GoPro’s unreleased Max 2 action camera. The 360 camera line has yet to see any generation increases since its inception back in 2019, with GoPro blaming production delays for the long wait.
The leak shows some internal images, from which we can’t get much information. But it looks very similar to GoPro’s teaser images, minus the addition of a screen. The listing makes it quite clear that it has no screen, but it works just fine… how? I don’t know. But it says it works, and they really, really would like to find a screen for it.
Similar to the first-gen Max, the Max 2 will feature the classic GoPro mounting system, a quarter-inch thread, and a replaceable battery inside a locked door. The battery appears to be the previous Enduro battery (white back) for HERO 12 and earlier action cameras, although I would have guessed it would be using the newer Enduro battery (all black) that is only compatible with the HERO 13. However, that could just have been for the prototype, but we’ll see when the camera is released.
Expectations are that GoPro will formally announce the Max 2 in September, just over a month away. It’s the perfect time to hit the holiday rush and be available to be given as gifts this year.
