DJI’s compact Neo 2 is quietly becoming one of the most interesting beginner drones around, and its latest firmware update gives creators another reason to pay attention.
The newly released v01.00.0600 firmware adds camera upgrades focused on fast, casual content creation — exactly the type of flying this lightweight drone was built for.
For anyone unfamiliar with the Neo 2, one of its biggest selling points is that it can fly controller-free, using palm takeoff, voice commands, and simple gesture-based controls for instant capture. The ultra-portable follow-me style drone is designed for travelers, first-time pilots, cyclists, runners, vloggers, and social media users who want aerial footage without carrying a bulky aircraft.
At roughly 151 grams, it’s small enough to toss in a bag, yet packed with premium-style features including omnidirectional obstacle sensing, ActiveTrack subject following, and up to 4K video capture. DJI also gives it full prop guards, making it less intimidating for new users.
The headline feature in the new firmware is Live Photo support in SelfieShot and Spotlight mode. That may sound minor, but it’s a genuinely useful addition. Live Photos capture a moment with motion before and after the shutter press, creating a more dynamic memory than a standard still image. For creators posting quick travel clips, outdoor adventures, or family moments, it means more content options from a single tap.
SelfieShot is one of the Neo 2’s most popular modes because it automates cinematic takeoffs and framing while keeping the subject centered. Adding Live Photo support here makes sense — now users can capture movement and personality, not just static selfies.
Spotlight mode also gets Live Photo support, which should appeal to users filming moving subjects while keeping the camera locked onto them. Whether it’s a dog run, beach walk, bike ride, or city stroll, it gives users a richer shot without needing editing skills.
The second major upgrade is even more exciting for video fans: 4K/100fps and 1080p/100fps recording in Palm Control mode. Palm Control is designed for hands-free operation, allowing users to launch and command the drone without a controller. Until now, advanced frame-rate options were more limited in this simplified mode.
With 100fps recording, users can create smooth slow-motion clips while still using the easiest control method available. That’s a strong combination for casual creators who want premium-looking footage without learning manual drone skills.
Outside the update, the Neo 2 already stands out with 49GB internal storage, intelligent tracking, and a travel-friendly design. Reviewers have praised it as one of the strongest budget-friendly drone options thanks to its smart features and approachable flying experience. DJI also notes that the firmware fixes known issues, which usually means better stability and smoother day-to-day performance.
