DJI’s latest smartphone gimbal adds a tiny remote with big tricks

DJI is expanding its smartphone filmmaking lineup again, but US buyers are being left on the sidelines for now. The company has officially launched the new DJI Osmo Mobile 8P globally, introducing a feature-packed smartphone gimbal aimed at creators, vloggers, and livestreamers who want smoother footage and smarter tracking tools.

While the product is rolling out in Europe and other international markets, DJI has not announced US availability, continuing a growing trend where some of its newest products never officially make it to American shelves. That’s especially notable because DJI still sells older smartphone stabilizers in the US, including the DJI Osmo Mobile 8.

The biggest addition to the “Pro” edition of Osmo Mobile 8 is something DJI calls the “Osmo FrameTap,” a detachable remote controller with a built-in display. Instead of blindly starting recordings or relying on timers, creators can now see a live mirrored view from the smartphone camera while controlling the gimbal remotely. DJI says the joystick allows users to precisely adjust framing, pan movements, and zoom levels from a distance.

In practice, that means solo creators can finally shoot rear-camera selfies or cinematic walking shots without constantly running back to check whether they’re still in frame.

The remote also works alongside DJI’s new Multifunctional Module 2 accessory, which brings adjustable fill lighting and expanded tracking capabilities. According to DJI, the system can now track not only people and pets but also objects like vehicles and landmarks.

Tracking upgrades are another major focus of the Osmo Mobile 8P. DJI’s updated ActiveTrack 8.0 system is designed to keep subjects centered, even in chaotic environments such as concerts, sports venues, or crowded city streets. The company says the tracking is better at handling temporary obstructions and fast movements — areas where smartphone gimbals traditionally struggle.

Apple users get an additional perk: native tracking support through Apple DockKit integration. That means iPhone users can use subject tracking directly inside Apple’s native camera app without relying entirely on DJI’s Mimo app.

Hardware-wise, DJI says the Osmo Mobile 8P uses its eighth-generation stabilization system for smoother handheld footage. The device weighs around 386 grams and includes a built-in tripod plus a 215 mm extension rod for wider angles and selfie-style shooting. Battery life is rated at up to 10 hours, and the USB-C port can also charge a connected smartphone during long shoots or livestreams.

DJI is also leaning heavily into software-driven cinematic tools through its Mimo app. Features like DynamicZoom create Hollywood-style zoom effects, while modes like Slow Shutter, Action Shot, and Widescreen aim to make professional-looking footage easier for casual creators.

One standout feature is the gimbal’s “360° Infinite Spin” capability, which allows unlimited horizontal rotation for sweeping cinematic movements. Combined with the AI tracking system, DJI says creators can maintain continuous subject lock even during complicated camera moves.

Pricing in Europe starts at 159 euros for the standard combo, which includes the gimbal and FrameTap remote. A more advanced tracking bundle costs 189 euros, while a creator-focused package with DJI microphone accessories comes in at 219 euros. US buyers looking for DJI smartphone stabilization gear, however, will likely have to stick with the older Osmo Mobile 8.
