DJI revives the Mini 3 Pro with a surprise firmware update

DJI appears to have a small surprise for Mini 3 Pro owners. The company has released a new firmware update for the compact drone, marking its first firmware refresh in more than two years.

The catch? There’s no exciting new shooting mode or headline-grabbing feature to celebrate.

The update brings aircraft firmware to v01.00.1000, with DJI’s release notes offering just one line of explanation: “Fixed some known issues.”

That’s not much to go on, especially for a drone that once helped redefine what creators could expect from a lightweight camera drone. Still, it’s a reminder that DJI hasn’t entirely left the Mini 3 Pro behind, even as the company’s newer models take center stage.

Alongside the aircraft firmware, DJI has listed updated firmware versions for its compatible remote controllers:

  • DJI RC Pro: v03.02.0900
  • DJI RC: v01.03.2600
  • DJI RC-N1: v04.14.0700
  • DJI Fly app: v1.21.16 or above for both iOS and Android

DJI hasn’t explained which specific issues have been fixed, so owners shouldn’t expect any confirmed improvements to image quality, flight performance, battery life, or intelligent shooting features.

If the update fails, DJI recommends restarting the aircraft, remote controller, and DJI Fly app or DJI Assistant 2 (Consumer Drones Series) before trying again.

Launched in May 2022, the DJI Mini 3 Pro was a significant step forward for DJI’s lightweight drone lineup. Weighing less than 249 grams, it packed features that previously felt more at home on larger, pricier drones.

Its standout feature was True Vertical Shooting. Rather than cropping a horizontal image to fit a phone screen, the camera’s gimbal rotates 90 degrees to capture portrait-oriented photos and videos natively. For travel creators and social media users, that remains a particularly useful feature.

The Mini 3 Pro also offers a 1/1.3-inch sensor, photos up to 48MP, 4K video at up to 60fps, three-directional obstacle sensing, and ActiveTrack subject tracking. Its advertised flight time reaches 34 minutes with the standard battery, or up to 47 minutes with the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus where available.

Despite its capabilities, DJI discontinued the Mini 3 Pro as its lineup evolved, with the Mini 4 Pro taking over its position. The original model remains a capable drone, even if it’s no longer the newest option.

Today, the latest Pro model in DJI’s Mini lineup is the DJI Mini 5 Pro, which pushes the formula further with a larger 1-inch-type sensor, 4K video at up to 120fps, 50MP photos, and improved omnidirectional obstacle sensing with forward-facing LiDAR. It also offers a gimbal capable of 225-degree rotation, 360-degree ActiveTrack, and improved low-light shooting capabilities. Those upgrades make it a considerably more advanced creative tool than the Mini 3 Pro.

But that doesn’t make this firmware update irrelevant. For existing owners, a maintenance release is still worth checking out, even when the release notes don’t promise anything dramatic.
