New Skydio software solution for drone emergency response

Drone manufacturer Skydio has launched DFR Command, a software solution that aims to simplify how public safety agencies deploy drones in emergency situations. According to the company, it’s the world’s first software solution built to start, operate, and grow Drone as First Responder (DFR) programs.

The introduction of DFR Command comes as many law enforcement agencies grapple with increasing demands for efficient emergency response. Traditional methods can often be slow and resource-intensive, prompting a search for more effective solutions. Skydio’s new software addresses these challenges by simplifying the integration of drone technology into existing public safety frameworks.

In a practical scenario, when an alarm is triggered, DFR Command enables a nearby drone to be launched automatically. This drone can reach the scene in minutes, providing real-time information that can guide officers before they arrive. This capability not only improves response speed but also enhances the overall situational awareness of law enforcement personnel.

Establishing effective Drone as First Responder (DFR) programs has historically been a complex endeavor. Agencies often face difficulties integrating various technologies, managing regulatory requirements, and training personnel. Skydio’s DFR Command aims to streamline this process by offering a comprehensive platform that simplifies operations for agencies of all sizes.

The software operates in three phases: Ready, Respond, and Resolve.

  1. Ready: DFR Command helps agencies strategically position drones for quick access. By using simulation algorithms, it ensures that drones can respond to over 90% of high-priority calls within two minutes.
  2. Respond: When an incident occurs, DFR Command allows drones to be airborne in as little as 20 seconds. Officers can access live footage, which aids in decision-making and enhances situational awareness.
  3. Resolve: The software also ensures that captured video and images are properly marked for evidence, providing crucial timestamps and details for investigations. This integration helps create a more comprehensive picture of incidents, supporting officers on the ground.

As drone technology becomes more prevalent in public safety, community trust remains a critical concern. DFR Command features a Transparency Dashboard that allows agencies to share flight data with the public. This initiative aims to foster open communication and alleviate concerns about privacy and surveillance.

Skydio is offering trial programs for agencies interested in exploring the potential of drones as first responders. This initiative allows communities to experience the benefits firsthand. “If you think DFR could be useful for your community, Skydio can get a low-friction trial up and running in a matter of weeks to start showing value to your command staff, city councils, mayors, and more,” the company says.
