Teledyne FLIR, Gremsy unveil new AI-driven thermal drone payload

Teledyne FLIR has announced an exciting new partnership with Gremsy, integrating its Boson radiometric thermal camera module into Gremsy’s gimbaled Vio F1 drone payload. This advanced, lightweight electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) payload is designed to tackle a range of critical missions, from infrastructure inspection to disaster relief, firefighting, search and rescue (SAR), and public safety operations.

Developed under Teledyne FLIR’s “Thermal by FLIR” program, the Vio F1 combines cutting-edge thermal imaging technology with Gremsy’s expertise in gimbal and payload design. Assembled in the US, the payload is both National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) compliant and ITAR-free, making it a powerful solution for sensitive applications.

Vio F1 is loaded with advanced features. Its Sony 4K Block Zoom EO sensor offers up to 240x zoom, while the 640 x 512 Boson radiometric thermal camera adds an impressive 8x zoom capability. Together, these sensors deliver high-precision imaging for diverse scenarios, from pinpointing structural damage during inspections to identifying survivors in search-and-rescue missions.

Adding to its versatility is a 2,400-meter laser range finder, ideal for industrial applications that require accurate measurements. The payload’s intuitive viewing modes allow operators to toggle seamlessly between visible and thermal imagery — or use both simultaneously — making it adaptable for complex and dynamic environments.

Equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities, the Vio F1 enhances operational efficiency with features like advanced detection and auto zoom. These capabilities enable the payload to identify and track critical objects, such as humans, vehicles, and boats, with automated adjustments to ensure optimal clarity. This innovation eliminates the need for manual zooming, streamlining operations during high-stakes missions.

“Working with the global leader in thermal imaging through the Thermal by FLIR program empowered Gremsy to drive innovation and get Vio swiftly to market,” says Vinh Tran, CEO of Gremsy. “Our goal was to create a payload that is compatible with multiple platforms, including Pixhawk, CubePilot, and Skynode, and to offer an easy-to-integrate solution for any drone maker, including Blue sUAS providers.”

Dan Walker, vice president of product development at Teledyne FLIR, highlights the importance of the partnership, stating, “The Vio offers precision and accuracy, plus the upcoming implementation of our radiometric JPG file format will soon enable pilots to leverage the FLIR Thermal Studio Suite analysis and reporting software.”
