DJI has introduced a new safety accessory for its flagship Matrice 400 enterprise drone, giving operators an added layer of protection during emergency situations. The new DJI AP100 Parachute is designed to reduce the impact of an in-flight failure by safely lowering the aircraft to the ground, helping protect expensive payloads while also reducing risks to people and property below.
The rear-mounted system weighs about 935 grams (2.1 pounds) and is designed specifically for the Matrice 400. Despite the added hardware, DJI says the drone retains its 15.8-kilogram (34.8-pound) maximum takeoff weight, with the parachute reducing flight time by only about six minutes.
The AP100 can deploy either automatically or manually, depending on the situation. If the system detects abnormal flight attitude or speed that suggests the aircraft is no longer flying safely, it can trigger deployment in less than 600 milliseconds. Once deployed, the parachute slows the aircraft to a descent rate of under 5 meters per second, helping reduce the force of impact.
Operators can also deploy the parachute manually using an on-screen control in the DJI Pilot 2 app if they determine that landing under a parachute is the safest option.
Built with redundant safety systems
Unlike many drone accessories that rely on the aircraft itself, the AP100 functions as an independent safety module. It includes its own flight controller, sensors, communications system, and power supply, allowing it to continue monitoring the drone even if the aircraft experiences a serious electrical failure.
DJI says the system constantly checks the health of its gas generator and communication links while cross-validating flight data from both the drone and the parachute module. This redundancy is intended to reduce the chances of accidental deployment while ensuring the parachute activates when it’s genuinely needed.
The AP100 also features built-in backup capacitors that provide up to one hour of independent power, allowing it to continue monitoring flight conditions even if the drone loses power.
Another important feature is an integrated Flight Termination System (FTS). If activated, it cuts power to the drone’s motors within 600 milliseconds, stopping the propellers before the parachute deploys and reducing the risk of tangled lines during descent.

Helping meet European flight requirements
While US operators will likely view the AP100 primarily as an additional safety measure, the accessory could be particularly valuable for organizations operating internationally.
DJI says the AP100 allows existing Matrice 400 aircraft to meet European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) operational safety requirements for C5 or UK5 classifications used in STS-01 operations.
For organizations seeking C6 or UK6 certification for STS-02 missions, including certain beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations, DJI notes that certification applies only to factory-certified systems. Those operators will need to purchase the DJI Matrice 400 (C6) Worry-Free Plus Combo, which includes the AP100 from the factory.
The parachute can also support compliance for standard scenario operations covering flights over populated urban areas and certain BVLOS missions where permitted by local regulators.
Designed for demanding environments
Like the Matrice 400 itself, the AP100 carries an IP55 rating, allowing it to operate in dusty environments and rain. DJI says it remains functional in temperatures ranging from -4°F to 122°F (-20°C to 50°C), making it suitable for industries such as public safety, infrastructure inspection, utilities, and surveying that often operate in harsh weather conditions.
Following deployment, the system emits loud audible alarms and flashes high-intensity lights for up to an hour, warning people nearby to stay clear while helping operators quickly locate and recover the aircraft.
As enterprise drones take on increasingly complex missions, especially BVLOS operations and flights near populated areas, safety systems like the AP100 are becoming an increasingly important part of the overall drone ecosystem. For Matrice 400 operators, DJI’s latest accessory offers an additional safeguard that could help protect both costly equipment and the people below when the unexpected happens.
