FCC filing hints at DJI’s entry into 360-degree camera space

A new chapter in the action camera rivalry is on the horizon as DJI prepares to enter the 360-degree camera market. Recent filings with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) have revealed the potential arrival of the DJI Osmo 360, hinting at a direct challenge to market leaders like Insta360 and the long-delayed GoPro Max successor. With the holiday season approaching, the timing of these filings suggests that DJI is aiming to make a splash in the action camera world before the holidays.

While the FCC filings offer some hints about the DJI Osmo 360, including the camera’s wireless specifications and internal components, they stop short of providing a full technical breakdown. However, some insights from industry insiders and leaked design renderings have emerged, pointing to a device that could rival the image quality and versatility of the Insta360 X4, the current leader in the 360-degree camera space.

The Osmo 360 is expected to come equipped with dual-lens capabilities, allowing users to capture immersive spherical footage. Given DJI’s track record with stabilization technology, the camera is likely to feature enhanced electronic stabilization, which could set it apart from competitors. This focus on stabilization would align with DJI’s recent offerings in the Osmo Action 5 Pro and its drone lineup, both of which emphasize smooth, jitter-free footage.

Competing with established giants: Insta360 and GoPro

DJI’s entry into the 360-degree camera market comes at a time when competition is heating up. Insta360 has established itself as a frontrunner, thanks to its comprehensive editing tools, user-friendly app, and strong social media presence. The Insta360 X4, in particular, has become a go-to for creators who want to capture unique perspectives and share them seamlessly across platforms.

For DJI to successfully challenge Insta360, it will need to offer a similarly seamless editing experience. The DJI Mimo app, which supports the Osmo Action series, would need significant updates to handle the complex editing demands of 360-degree video. Users expect features like easy keyframing for dynamic edits, AI-assisted reframing, and compatibility with editing platforms that allow for more creative control. A successful launch would depend not only on the Osmo 360’s hardware but also on how well DJI can enhance its software to deliver a smooth post-production workflow.

GoPro, on the other hand, has struggled to maintain momentum in the 360-degree space. The GoPro Max, launched in 2019, has not seen a direct successor, leaving a gap in the market that Insta360 has capitalized on. Although GoPro is reportedly working on the Max 2, delays have left consumers and professionals eager for a new, high-performance option. DJI’s Osmo 360 could be positioned to fill that gap, offering a fresh alternative for those who have been waiting for GoPro’s next move.
