Insta, a Finnish defense technology firm, has developed a patented method for safely clearing unexploded ordnance (UXO) with a unique approach that relies on drones. Called Insta Safe EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), the system is designed to make clearance operations safer and less costly, especially for humanitarian demining efforts.
The method works with two drones: one transports a clearing charge to the unexploded ordnance, and a second drone remotely detonates it from a safe distance. According to Harri Vuolle, Insta’s product lead for uncrewed aviation products, “the new method keeps clearance personnel out of immediate danger.”
Global landmine contamination remains a major issue, with an estimated 110 million landmines still active around the world. Countries affected by ongoing or past conflicts, including Ukraine, are often heavily mined, posing dangers to civilians and delaying rebuilding efforts. In Ukraine alone, up to 30% of the land is reportedly affected by landmines and other explosives.

Insta Safe EOD seeks to provide an affordable and sustainable approach to this issue. The clearing frame, made from weatherproof cardboard, can be delivered by commercially available drones, while the second-stage device initiates detonation remotely. Vuolle emphasized that Insta’s new system not only keeps costs down but is also adaptable to different drones, supporting flexibility in post-conflict demining.
Complementing Insta Safe EOD, Insta’s Insta Blue Aware system adds situational awareness to clearance missions. This system provides real-time mapping, location tracking of UXO, and secure text and voice communication, giving teams in the field greater oversight of ongoing clearance efforts.
With a 50-year history in defense technology, Insta is a strategic partner to the Finnish Defense Forces and has expanded its expertise through partnerships with Lockheed Martin and NATO. The company’s efforts reflect a continuing focus on safety in conflict zones and areas undergoing post-conflict recovery, bringing new tools to complex demining challenges.
