DJI M30 drone users can now fly safely over people

Looking to fly your DJI Matrice 30 (M30) drone safely over people? Canada-based Aerial Vehicle Safety Solutions (AVSS) has cleared a key regulatory hurdle for its PRS-M30 parachute recovery system, making it easier for commercial drone pilots to legally expand their DJI M30 operations in urban environments where such flights were previously restricted.

The DJI M30 was launched in March 2022 as a testament to what a compact, folding drone – one that can fit into a backpack – can also offer performance that you would typically expect from much bigger platforms such as the M300 RTK. The M30 boasts a 48 MP 1/2-inch CMOS sensor camera with 200× digital zoom, a 12 MP wide-angle camera, 8K photo, 4K/30fps video resolution, and a laser rangefinder that can give the precise coordinates of objects up to 1,200 meters away.

The ASTM F3322-24a standard is a critical industry benchmark that ensures parachute recovery systems meet strict safety requirements. By passing this updated standard, AVSS provides M30 users with a reliable solution for enhanced operational flexibility.

AVSS wasted no time after clearing compliance, immediately shipping its first PRS-M30 parachutes to customers and dealers in North America and Europe. New orders are now open, with deliveries planned throughout Q2 2025.

The timing aligns well with a significant change for public safety agencies in the US. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently introduced a streamlined Certificate of Waiver (COW) process for Drone-as-Responder (DFR) operations in shielded environments. This new process provides a faster approval route compared to the older Certificate of Authorization (COA) system, cutting wait times from months to just weeks. One key requirement under the waiver is that drones weighing over 0.88 pounds must have an ASTM F3322-compliant parachute recovery system when flying over people in non-life-saving situations.

For agencies and businesses looking to integrate the PRS-M30 with their DJI M30 drones, more details are available on the AVSS website.
