New DJI Terra update adds HEIF support, boosts reconstruction performance

DJI is continuing to refine its mapping and modeling ecosystem with the latest update to DJI Terra, and version 5.2.0 brings a mix of speed boosts, smarter automation, and improved output quality for enterprise users.

At its core, DJI Terra is designed to turn drone data into actionable 2D maps and 3D models — used across construction, surveying, public safety, and infrastructure inspection. This update doesn’t radically change the workflow, but it does make that workflow faster and more efficient in ways professionals will notice.

Faster workflows, less manual work

One of the standout additions is support for HEIF photo imports, but specifically for data captured using the Zenmuse L3. While that may sound niche, it reflects DJI’s growing focus on integrating its hardware and software more tightly, especially for high-end mapping missions.

Another practical upgrade is the ability to export 2D maps in GeoTIFF (COG) format. For professionals working with GIS platforms, this is a big deal. Cloud Optimized GeoTIFFs load faster and are easier to handle in downstream software, meaning less waiting and smoother collaboration.

DJI is also cutting down tedious office work. The update introduces automatic mark identification for datasets collected using the DJI D-RTK 3. In simple terms, that means less manual marking and faster processing — something surveyors and mapping teams will immediately appreciate.

More power under the hood

Performance improvements are another major theme here. DJI Terra 5.2.0 now lets users toggle “High-Efficiency Mode” or customize how their system uses multiple CPU cores. That translates directly into faster reconstruction times, especially useful for large datasets.

Behind the scenes, DJI has also refined LiDAR processing. Improvements to aerotriangulation help optimize flight trajectory calculations, which in turn enhances point cloud accuracy. Base station parsing has also been tightened, improving positional precision in LiDAR projects.

On the visual side, users should see clearer and more natural-looking orthophoto maps, particularly from oblique flight data. Meanwhile, updates to 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) boost both quality and speed, especially when working in high or extra-high quality modes.

Another subtle but important tweak: noise reduction and accuracy improvements are now enabled by default in visible-light point cloud projects. That means cleaner outputs without extra setup.

Small fixes, practical notes

DJI also addressed a bug affecting contour line intervals when working in feet — an issue that could cause real headaches for US-based users relying on imperial units.

There are a couple of limitations to keep in mind. HEIF support is currently limited to Zenmuse L3 datasets, and Windows users still need to watch out for the 260-character file path limit when working with multi-core processing. DJI says that’s something slated for a future fix.

While version 5.2.0 may not introduce flashy headline features, this DJI Terra update reflects a clear direction: tighter hardware-software integration, smarter automation, and faster processing. For enterprise drone users, that combination matters more than anything else. Every minute saved in processing — and every improvement in accuracy — translates directly into cost savings and better decision-making in the field.
