Silicon Valley gets its first-ever drone delivery service

Silicon Valley is about to see a major transformation in home delivery, with drones now taking to the skies. Matternet, a pioneer in drone technology, has launched the first-ever drone delivery service in California, offering residents in Mountain View and Sunnyvale an ultra-fast, zero-emissions way to receive food and other goods right at their doorstep.

This new service, which has been piloting since late August, marks a significant milestone in the region’s delivery landscape. Leveraging Matternet’s FAA Type-Certified M2 Drone Delivery platform, the drones can safely navigate controlled airspace over densely populated areas, delivering packages via a tether drop system. This means items are lowered directly to customers’ doorsteps, offering an entirely new, automated delivery experience.

Matternet’s CEO, Andreas Raptopoulos, emphasizes the company’s focus on scaling its drone operations. “We’re entering the next phase of scale in drone delivery — building a new layer of ultra-efficient logistics infrastructure that will become an essential utility for every household,” says Raptopoulos.

The service promises more than just speed — it also offers environmental benefits. By cutting down on vehicle trips, Matternet’s drones reduce road congestion and greenhouse gas emissions. Each drone delivery is fully automated, with drones returning to a central hub for a quick battery swap before taking off for their next drop, creating a seamless and eco-friendly process.

“The future is finally here — this is the right delivery experience for the digital age,” Raptopoulos says. “It is so fast, it feels like magic. And every delivery means one less trip by car — less congestion in our cities, and fewer emissions in the air we breathe.”

Residents have already praised the convenience and futuristic appeal of drone delivery. Sign-ups are available here for those in Mountain View and Sunnyvale eager to experience this cutting-edge delivery system.
