DJI has released an exciting firmware update for its advanced Zenmuse L2 aerial LiDAR payload, revolutionizing its performance for precision mapping and utility inspections. This payload, designed for DJI’s flagship Matrice 300 RTK and Matrice 350 RTK drones, offers significant advancements in data capture and operational efficiency, solidifying its place as a game-changer in aerial surveying.
The Zenmuse L2 features cutting-edge LiDAR technology, achieving up to 30% greater detection range than its predecessor, the L1. It also supports up to five returns, enabling detailed mapping even through dense vegetation. The integrated RGB camera boasts a 4/3 CMOS sensor with a mechanical shutter and enhanced pixel size, improving image quality for colorized point clouds. Operators can map terrain with vertical and horizontal accuracy of 4cm and 5cm, respectively — critical for high-precision tasks like 1:500-scale surveys.
Highlights of new firmware (v04.00.07.01)
The firmware, released earlier this month, brings several new features that enhance the sensor’s functionality:
- Power line Follow mode: The firmware adds support for Power Line Follow mode when used with M300 RTK and DJI RC Plus remote controller. Operators can now pause and manually navigate branch points while maintaining uninterrupted point cloud recording. The update also allows gimbal control via the remote controller’s dial for added flexibility. Further, the update adds the Mark Branch Point feature. PinPoint will be automatically added at the branch point.
- Efficiency mode in IMU calibration: During LiDAR mapping, this mode reduces the number of required calibration flights, saving time and resources.
- RGB camera adjustments: Users can disable RGB coloring during mapping tasks to streamline workflows.
This firmware aligns with updates for the drones and controllers it supports, such as the DJI RC Plus remote and DJI Pilot 2 app, ensuring seamless integration across systems.
