So just this morning, we learned from our old friend that DJI might, after all, be introducing a new drone this year. Take a look at these photos that show some sort of a DJI Mavic Mini. Could this be the Spark 2 that was supposed to be introduced before the summer or is this a DJI Mavic Air successor? Let’s take a closer look.
DJI Mavic Mini
Photos, possibly from a Chinese (patent) filing, that were shared on Twitter this morning by OsitaLV (now pulled) show a foldable DJI drone that we have not seen before. The drone has the look of a DJI Mavic Mini. Especially when you compare it to the size of the plug and USB cord next to it. Is this the DJI Spark 2 that was supposed to be launched before the summer? Or is this the successor to the DJI Mavic Air?
You can see in the photos that the legs fold in a similar way to the DJI Mavic Pro and DJI Mavic 2 Pro/Zoom. On the bottom of the unmanned aircraft, you can see what seems to be an on/off switch and battery status indicator LED lights. You can also see what are likely to be two obstacle avoidance sensors that would also assist during landing the unmanned aircraft. In another photo from the front, you can see two obstacle avoidance sensors as well. There do not seem to be any sensor at the side or back of the drone.
It is hard to say for sure but it seems that the DJI Mavic Mini comes with a replaceable battery that is inserted from the back of the drone. In one of the photos, you can see what I think is a release clip for the battery on the side as well as the lines or edges of the battery itself.
The DJI Mavic Mini seems to feature a smaller 3-axis mechanical stabilized gimbal, similar in design to the DJI Mavic 2 but of lesser quality. We would expect this drone to be able to shoot 4K video.
Overall, the design is very similar to the DJI Mavic 2. The drone has a very similar shape albeit much smaller. It seems to be smaller and built cheaper than the DJI Mavic Air and therefore we believe this might be a DJI Spark 2 or an altogether new drone in DJI’s product line-up. One that we will call for now the new DJI Mavic Mini.
What do you think about this new drone? Do you think that it will indeed be a completely new model, i.e. a DJI Mavic Mini? Or do you think this is the DJI Spark 2? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
