With all the rumors about the Phantom 5 being canceled, the Phantom 4 out of production and DJI’s scheduled product release of what is rumored NOT to be a drone, people are wondering if we can still expect a new drone from DJI. Well, we have some good news for you. The Chinese drone maker is about to release the DJI Spark 2 drone. The drone is expected to feature some important upgrades compared to the original Spark, that was launched way back in 2017. And, leaked information from DJI insiders tells us that the Spark 2 will be released as soon as July. Keep reading on to learn more about the rumored specs of the Spark 2.
Update 6/18/19: We have received word that the Spark 2 launch that was scheduled for July 23rd has been postponed indefinitely. An industry insider told us that DJI sent out a memo last week stating: “due to a shift in priorities the July 23 event is now on hold until further notice”.Unfortunately, no information was provided explaining the postponement nor was a new date announced.

DJI Spark 2 rumors and specs
It has been very quiet for a long time now when it to the DJI Spark. I mean, DJI released a firmware update back in December of 2017 and released the DJI Spark BROWN last summer, but otherwise there really hasn’t been any news around this little drone.
The original Spark had some connectivity issues, and we fully expect DJI to improve this for the yet-to-be-released Spark 2. However, we do not expect the Spark 2 to receive OcuSync 2.0.
Here are the specs and other improvements we expect for the DJI Spark 2:
- 4K video at 30fps
- increased video bitrate
- an improved 3-axis gimbal
- ActiveTrack 2.0
- 2x digital zoom
- Increased flight time. 18 minutes instead of 16 minutes for the old Spark
- New battery design. Not compatible with the old one
- Same official range but with new antenna design and a new remote controller with improved tech for a better connection. No OcuSync 2.0 however.
- It will come in two colors: black and white
- The Spark 2 will offer a new panorama mode
You can compare these specs with our wishlist for the Spark 2, that we wrote back in early 2018.
Expect the DJI Spark 2 to be as much fun to fly as the old Spark, but with higher quality photo and video capabilities and without the connectivity issues that plagued the original Spark, while keeping the same form factor, and portability. We do not yet know how the new Spark 2 will be priced but expect it to come in at the same or similar level of the original Spark ($499).
What do you think about the Spark 2? Awesome little drone and excited to see this come to market? Or do you wish DJI would focus on ‘real’ drones and develop a successor to the DJI Phantom 4? Let us know in the comments below.
