In a world where access to GPS on the battlefield can win or lose a fight, Maxar is working on a solution for when having it just isn’t an option. Called Raptor, the product uses satellite mapping to build a 3D globe that can serve as an alternative to GPS.
Using nothing but the drone’s native cameras and a controller loaded with Maxar’s 3D world data, drone operators can use Raptor to precisely navigate an area without any GPS. This is useful for defense applications where an adversary is denying GPS in an area; the data collected by Maxar’s satellites is accurate and updated enough to not just fly a drone but to pinpoint lat-long coordinates of ground objects.
Raptor works by using a few different pieces of software: Raptor Guide, loaded directly onto the drone to provide position data; Raptor Ace, installed on a laptop that carries Maxar’s 3D map and can provide lat-long coordinates; and finally Raptor Sync, which can take visual and other sensor readings from the drone and communicate them with Ace.
With Maxar’s fleet of orbiting satellites, the company can provide a map of the entire globe for operations anywhere in the world. The company can also provide quick updates on a specific region depending on the needs of the users.
As drones become more and more widely used in combat operations, both in direct and indirect supporting roles, they have one big weakness: their need for GPS data. Combating GPS spoofing comes in multiple ways, both on drones and in space, with upgraded GPS satellites. However, the US Space Force’s plans for its next-generation satellites have been repeatedly delayed.
Products like Raptor provide an alternative solution for when you need to use your drone but don’t have the option of using GPS. Raptor can provide accurate coordinates for ground targets of up to 3m, which is far from perfect compared to traditional GPS solutions, but better than nothing if the only other option is no drones.
The release of Raptor is a change in Maxar’s business model as it expands its offerings from primarily just satellite imagery, which has proven game-changing in conflicts like Ukraine.
“Raptor will change the game for customers across the defense and commercial sectors,” said Peter Wilczynski, Chief Product Officer at Maxar Intelligence. “This software uses Maxar’s unique 3D global terrain data to ensure that autonomous systems get the job done no matter how much GPS interference they face.”
