DJI just announced a new date for their postponed ‘See the Bigger Picture’ event that was originally scheduled for July 18th. The new date is now August 23rd and the event will take place in the NY Metro Area at 10 am EST. Details of the event were shared in an email with DroneDJ. This time around there will not be a special press/media event taking place before the main event. Of course, the new Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom are widely expected to be introduced on that day by the world’s leading drone maker.
The event is now scheduled for August 23rd at 10 am
The original event was scheduled to take place on July 18th with a select press and media event on July 11th. We were invited to both events. However, in early July, DJI suddenly postponed both events citing ‘user experience and standard of innovation factors’ not being up to the desired level.
Thank you for RSVP’ing for the ‘See the Bigger Picture’ event on July 18th. Today we are making the difficult decision to push back the event. DJI is committed to introducing the most high-quality, cutting-edge technology in the market. We will postpone ‘See the Bigger Picture’ so we can deliver according to our standard of innovation. User experience is our top priority, and we wanted to ensure we can exceed our customers’ expectations for our technology by the time of the event. Please stay tuned for more information. Thank you for your continued interest and support.
The real reason behind the postponement of the event has remained unclear although many speculations can be found online.
DJI was widely expected to introduce the successor to the original folding Mavic Pro drone, the Mavic 2. Soon after the first leaked images of the new drone started to surface online, starting with this one. And later the now infamous DJI ad in the Argos catalog on July 28th, revealing not one but two new Mavic drones; the DJI Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom. During the same time frame, we have also seen various leaked photos of Mavic 2 Enterprise Editions, one even on the actual DJI website(!) make their way online.
All the leaked photos and specifications of the new Mavic drone have removed much, if not all, of the surprise element that DJI was hoping to maintain for their main event. Unfortunate as that may be, now at least we have a new date to look forward to! DroneDJ will be present to bring you coverage of the event and any news or specs that we haven’t already found out.
Mark August 23rd at 10 am on your calendars and stay tuned!
Expected specs of the DJI Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom
Here are the specs of the new drones as they were revealed in the Argos ad. The listing in the catalog provides us with some details about the new foldable drone. It says:
“The Mavic 2 is a small yet powerful drone with 1080p video transmission and up to 8km (5 miles) transmission distance and a max speed of 20m/s (45mph). It will turn the sky into your creative canvas. Its compact size and 31-minute max flight time makes this one of DJI’s most sophisticated flying cameras ever. Omnidirectional obstacle sensing with APAS and Active Track 2.0 give you the confidence to take to the sky and capture your moment. Dolly Zoom (zoom version only). DJI Mavic 2 Pro & DJI Mavic 2 Zoom.”
The new DJI Mavic 2 will apparently come in two versions:
- The DJI Mavic 2 Pro with 1-inch CMOS sensor Hasselblad camera
- The DJI Mavic 2 Zoom with 2x optical zoom (24mm – 48mm)
The new DJI Mavic 2 will have:
- A top speed of 45mph vs. 40 mph for the original Mavic Pro
- 31-minute flight time vs. 27 minutes for the original Mavic Pro
- 1080p OcuSync video transmission for up to 5 miles
- Omnidirectional obstacle sensing with APAS
- Active Track 2.0
- Dolly Zoom (zoom version only)
