A candy-carrying drone fell out of the sky in Ogaki, Gifu Prefecture, Japan last Saturday, injuring six people, including children. The unmanned aerial vehicle was distributing candy over a crowd at an event, when it suddenly crashed to the ground, as reported by The Japan Times.
Drone crash causes minor injuries
The people hit by the drone range from 5 to 48 years old. Most injuries were minor, such as scratches to the heads and shoulders.
The drone, weighing around 9 Lbs and measuring 34″ in diameter and 22″ in height, was dropping sweets and candy over the crowd at an event organized by a local tourism association. At the event, there were about 600 people, including around one hundred kids at the time of the accident.
The police are investigating the matter and are questioning the 37-year-old drone pilot, who represents a drone maker in the area. According to the event organizers, the pilot had said he received a permit from the transport ministry to operate a drone at the event.
In the U.S. and most other countries, drone pilots are prohibited to fly drones over crowds for exactly this reason. so far only CNN has been granted permission by the FAA to fly a very special drone over groups of people.
