Active Track

The automatic tracking feature on DJI camera drones is highly regarded. The drone maker has made aerial photography intuitive with several automatic features that simplify operation. Drones such as DJI Mini 4 Pro, Mini 3 Pro, Mavic 3 series, and Air series are all designed to follow you automatically, meaning you can focus on activities like running, biking, or snowboarding without worrying about crashes.

The DJI Mavic 3 Pro flagship prosumer drone shipped installed last year without the company’s tracking software (as well as a bunch of other stuff we’ve come to know and love about DJI products). Earlier this year, DJI released firmware that enabled tracking called Active Track 5.0. Naturally, we took it for some testing and compared it to the king of tracker drones, the Skydio 2.

A video of what looks to be ActiveTrack 3.0 running on the upcoming DJI Mavic Air 2 drone has recently emerged online. In the clip, we see the drone’s perspective as it follows a mountain biker riding through the forest. The video doesn’t exactly push the subject-tracking tech to its limits. But from a first glance, it looks to be an improvement over the tracking DJI offers on its current drones.
